Calistoga a ghost town after mandatory evacuation order

Before most of California was awake Wednesday, police and fire officials were doing everything they could to get people out of Calistoga.

A mandatory evacuation order for much of the town was issued about 3:30 a.m., when residents who live north of Grant Street woke to a knock at their doors. Officers told them the winds were shifting and the Tubbs Fire, one of 22 wildfires raging in California, could pose a danger to the small town.

Many heeded the warning — about half of the city’s 5,000 residents left early Wednesday....
